I worked at many things before following my passion for photography; printing in London, real estate in Portugal, PR in San Francisco – even a stint as a sailor.
I’m now lucky enough to be working with some of the world’s most recognised and established brands, applying my photography style to a variety of briefs ranging from Beth Ditto in a broom cupboard to the Queen at St James’s Palace.
My own personal work is based around longer form documentary style. I was the first professional photographer for nearly 40 years to be granted access by the UN to shoot inside the abandoned Nicosia Airport in Cyprus, which led to a story in NewsWeek Magazine. I recently travelled to Mexico and shot a variety of stories around Mexican identity, and I also shoot projects closer to home including my amazing Dutch neighbour Marjan. My work has appeared in all of the major UK Newspapers including the Independent on Sunday and The Observer Magazine.
On a shoot I am very relaxed and try and retain a sense of fun. I love what I do and I like the atmosphere to reflect that. Having worked in so many different situations, I draw on all of my past experiences to get the job done. I try not to take myself too seriously and find that the best results are achieved by making sure everyone is relaxed. That’s not to say I’m not serious too. As one of the few photographers to work directly with the Royal Palaces I know how to adhere to protocols!
